Beverly Clark was one of several Merseyside entrants in the James Carling International Pavement Art Competition at the 2011 Bold Street Festival. Her 'Copy Art' piece was Scottish artist Jack Vettriano's 'Singing Butler'. The colours are wonderful and this was such a fun piece - really well executed.

Roberto Rodriguez
This entry won joint 2nd prize in the Free Style category. I think it could just have easily been categorised as Copy Art because it is a montage of a Dali self-portrait and two Dali paintings. The horse comes from 'The Temptation of St Anthony' (1946) and the tigers from 'Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening' (1944). The whole thing is stunning. Roberto Rodriguez (Mexico) has captured Dali's mad stare exactly as in the original photograph.

Monet - Houses of Parliament (1903)
I asked Daniela Visone why she chose this painting. She said she had always wanted to paint it in oils, so it seemed a good choice for the Copy Art category of the James Carling Pavement Art Competition. The colours were wonderful - like the pavement was ablaze. Five days later (see bottom photo) the fire was almost out - such is the fate of pavement art!

Mexican Mars
this is Eduardo Almanza's brilliant reproduction of a Flemish baroque masterpiece. The original was painted by Rubens (1620's) and is titled 'Portrait of a Man
as the God Mars'. Strangely, it has been transposed by Eduardo - the original is facing to the left. Eduardo (Mexico) took 3rd prize in the Copy Art section with his Rubens (it would have been no surpise to me if he had won the class).
The finished portrait. (Besides its 3rd prize in Copy Art it won 2nd prize in the People's Choice) |

Pavement Baroque
Carlo Dolci painted 'Salome with the head of John the Baptist' in the 17th century. He was a Florentine painter of the baroque era. The painting is in the Royal Collection.
This version was created in chalk on Ropewalks Square by Julie Kirk-Purcell from California. She took the 2nd Prize in the James Carling Award for Copy Art class with this magnificent reproduction.

Emma was warned ........
Liverpool professional artist Keith Fearon paints photoreal and surreal images in oils. He also paints portraits of sports stars. Last year Keith won 1st prize in the freestyle art category at the Bold Street Festival. This year he topped the 'Peoples Choice' poll with an amazing chalk reproduction of his own painting 'Emma was warned about teasing'. (The original is on show in Keith's exhibition at the Corke Art Gallery, Aigburth, Liverpool - you'll have to hurry though, it finishes on Oct 8th.)

Steam and Power - a winner
Christine Edwards (Manchester) was the winner of the James Carling Award for Copy Art with this brilliant recreation of Peter Howson's 'Steam and Power'. I couldn't resist taking a photo of Christine's blackened face when she had finished her masterpiece (see below).

a local hero
Liverpool's 4th annual Bold Street Festival was held last weekend. The James Carling International Pavement Art Competition was a major feature on Sun (25th Sept). I spent the day wandering around with my camera and in the coming days I'm going to
put some photos here of the artists' amazing creations. Here's a bright starter from
Italy's Alberto Forlenza. I don't need to identify the subjects.
